Karl was born 1941
in Austria. He apprenticed as a chef in his native Austria
and subsequently as a Baker/Pastry Chef in Munich, Germany.
He spent his journeymen years in Germany, England and Switzerland.
In 1967 Karl immigrated to Canada settling initially in Montreal
then moving to Vancouver, BC which he now calls home.
Karl wanted to bring back the old-fashioned flavours in breads
and in 1976 he started importing products, mainly from Germany,
for baking bread, such as "Natural dehydrated sourdoughs"
for rye bread and different malts.
Over the years Karl has launched several innovative breads
and in his quest for authenticity, has become very passionate
about processes and ingredients. He is most certainly the
only baker that not only has a wood-fired bread oven built
into his kitchen but also has one on his patio so that he
can continue to bake through the summertime!
Karl’s hobbies include first and foremost his baking;
he also enjoys travelling, exploring different cultures and
cuisines, hiking and walking.
